Before you can use advanced troubleshooting techniques to identify and fix Terminal Server problems, it is helpful to configure your computer for troubleshooting. In addition, you need a basic understanding of troubleshooting concepts, procedures, and tools.
Using Terminal Server Licensing Troubleshooting Tools
Using the following tools can help you monitor Terminal Server Licensing status and diagnose the cause of Terminal Server licensing issues.
Terminal Server Licensing
You can use Terminal Server Licensing to do the following:
- View the list of discoverable license servers on your network.
- Connect to any discoverable license server on your network and view information about the licenses on that server.
Using the Terminal Server Licensing tool, you can view the following information: the list of installed client license key packs, the total number of licenses in each client license key pack, and the number of available and issued licenses in each key pack; the date a CAL was issued to each computer; the name of the computer to which each CAL is issued; the issue and expiration dates of each temporary license; and the name of the computer to which the license was issued.
Note
If you are running a Windows 2000 license server, expiration dates for temporary licenses are displayed only if you have Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later installed.
- Manage Terminal Server licenses.
- Perform the following management tasks: activate a license server, install CALs, reactivate a license server, deactivate a license server, repeat the installation of CALs, and change the properties of a license server.
This tool is included with Windows Server 2003. You can access this tool on any Terminal Server license server. For more information, see Terminal Server Licensing administrative tool ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=48896).
Terminal Services Licensing Reporter (Lsreport.exe)
You can use Terminal Services Licensing Reporter (Lsreport.exe) to create a report with information about the CALs that are installed on license servers.
Lsreport.exe exports information from the license server’s database into LSreport.txt, a tab-delimited text file. You can use this data to track license consumption and usage trends within your organization. This tool has been updated to include the client hardware ID, information that is useful for tracking the CALs that are issued to particular client devices.
To download Lsreport.exe, see Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=16721) on the Microsoft Download Center Web site.
Terminal Services License Server Viewer (Lsview.exe)
You can use Terminal Services License Server Viewer (Lsview.exe) to do the following:
- Display the name of each license server in the current domain and site, the type (enterprise or domain) of each license server in the domain, and the date and time that each license server is available.
- Create a log file with advanced diagnostic information about the discovery process.
To download Lsview.exe, see Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=16721) on the Microsoft Download Center Web site.
Terminal Server Client License Test tool (Tsctst.exe)
You can use the Terminal Server Client License Test tool to display information about CALs that reside on client devices. By default, this tool displays information in the following fields: Issuer, Scope, Issued to computer, Issued to user, License ID, Type/Version, Valid From, and Expires On.
To download Tsctst.exe, see Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=16721) on the Microsoft Download Center Web site.
Terminal Services Diagnostic Utility (Tstst.exe)
You can use the Terminal Services Diagnostic Utility to display configuration information for terminal servers. This tool provides a grace period check to determine whether terminal servers are still within the licensing grace period, and it enumerates available license servers.
To download Tstst.exe, see Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=16721) on the Microsoft Download Center Web site. Note that there are eight specialty tools, each corresponding to a specific support scenario. The specialty tool that contains Tstst.exe is MPSRPT DirSrvc.exe.
