ISSUE:
Windows XP boots; and the firewall is disabled. Enabling the firewall causes the following error to occur:
Could not start Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service .
Windows Sockets settings may be corrupted due to a networking software installation, spyware or remnants of it. Other errors, such as Page cannot be displayed may occur in the Internet Explorer.
While the Internet remains connected, the packets fail to transfer back and forth, which is caused by the corrupted Winsock settings.
SOLUTION:
Winsock now has the ability to self-heal. The new netsh command is available in Windows XP Service Pack 2. Netsh should be run from a command prompt and will show a successful completion message after the reset has occurred.
For example:
C:\Windows> netsh winsock reset successfully resets the Winsock Catalog .
To complete the reset, restart the system.
