The new Vista's "improved security" can sometimes be a pain in the neck for IT professionals, let alone a part-time one such as myself.  Earlier I had this little trouble of getting a Vista client to trust the root certificate of an Exchange Server 2003.  However, this is required before Outlook can communicate with Exchange Server successfully via RPC over HTTP, i.e. send/receive emails remotely.

Even the setting as trusted site and then install certificate in IE7 wouldn't work.  IE7 will say installation successful but then once you open the site again, it will return to certificate error status.

Today I finally found a way to hack it so I hope this will help you if you're also having the same problems.

So since IE7 can't install the certificate itself, you basically have to import the certificate into the Vista computer's local certificate store manually.

Here are the steps:

 
1. Copy Certificate to File:

    * Use IE7 to access your company's Outlook Web Access  (OWA) site
    * Click on the upper right hand certificate error
    * View the ceritifcate
    * Swith to Detailed tab and Copy to File
    * Use default format (DER) and save it as a xxx.CER

2. Use MMC to import the file

    * Launch MMC first (start-run-MMC)
    * Add the Certificate Snap-in (File-Add/Remove Snap-in-Certificate)
    * Go to Trusted Root Certification Authorities\Certificates
    * Click on Import
    * Choose the xxx.cer you just saved

Now the certificate should be successfully installed.  To verify, use IE7 to access OWA and you shouldn't see any certificate error anymore.
